The Biggest Social Media Time Wasters (And How to Fix Them)

Let’s face it. Running a business is no small feat. Between managing day-to-day operations, serving customers, and growing your brand, social media can easily feel like another overwhelming task on your already full plate. Yet, these days it’s a non-negotiable part of modern marketing. So how do you make the most out of it without wasting your biggest resource (your time)?

Here are the biggest social media time wasters that I see business owners fall into – and how you can fix them to maximize your efficiency and impact all while saving time and energy.

  1. Posting randomly without a plan

Here’s the deal. You know you need to post, so you do – when you remember to. This leads to inconsistent messaging, missed opportunities, and the constant stress of scrambling for content ideas.

The fix:  Create a content calendar. Plan your posts around promotions, events, and key goals for your business. Not only does this keep you organized, but it also ensures that every post is an aimless “Hail Mary” without a purpose.

Pro Tip. Block out time once or twice a month to brainstorm and schedule content - get as tech-savvy as you’d like with content creation and scheduling, or go old-school with a pen and paper until you’re ready to create - the main goal here is to get intentional with your time and plan for content. If your brainstorming sessions lead to very little results and ideas, it’s time to consider a strategist, my friend.

  1. Engaging with the Wrong Audience

Are you spending time interacting, but with people who aren’t genuinely interested in your products or services? This feels like engagement, yes, but the results are just not there.

The fix: Know your ideal audience & serve them. Get clear on who they are, what they care about, and where they hang out. Focus on building relationships within niche communities, engaging in meaningful conversations, and responding to genuine inquiries.

  1. Over-editing Captions (or spending too much time on graphics)

Oftentimes we spend so much time crafting the “perfect” caption or tweaking graphics too much that we begin to over scrutinize every piece of the content pie. Before you know it, an  hour has passed, and you’re still not done with this one post. You’re taking the people out of social media and your audience can pick up on that.

The fix: In the fast-paced world of social media, authenticity and consistency matter more than flawless design or poetic captions. Give your captions a once-over to make sure it sounds like YOU and that your audience will read it.

Pro Tip. Use a brand book/kit function in programs like Adobe or Canva to save time when designing. Keep your consistent colors, fonts, and styling handy for quick content creation. If you need help with this, I’ve got you covered (you'll be amazed at how much time you save).

  1. Jumping on Every Trend

Trends are super-fun and I love to catch a viral wave with clients! However, if you begin to feel the pressure to hop on every single trending audio, hashtag, or challenge then it’s time to breathe, put the tripod down, and just pause. Not every trend will align with your brand or brand voice, and that is okay. Chasing all of them can be exhausting and time-consuming.

The fix: Be intentional and selective. Choose trends that align with your brand’s voice, message, audience, and goals. It’s better to do one relevant trend than to try to catch them all and yield no results.

Pro Tip. Save audio and jot ideas in your Notes app on your phone. Prioritize quality and brand over fleeting popularity.

  1. Not Measuring Success

So you’re posting consistently but you still have no idea what’s working, what’s clicking with your audience, and what’s serving your business. More importantly, you have no idea what’s not working or serving your audience. This leads to wasted effort on content that doesn’t resonate with your audience.

The fix: You’ll want to begin tracking your analytics and key metrics on socials. Each content type has various metrics that matter, use insights like engagement rate, reach, clicks, likes, and more to refine your strategy and double down on what’s working.

Pro Tip. If you have no idea where to start with data analytics and metric tracking, it is okay. Working with a strategist can help you gain insights on these key metrics for your content.. The important thing is to set time aside each month (I suggest twice a month) to review analytics. Look for patterns, learn, and be willing to pivot based on your real data.
